Make the most of your adventures in the wild with OS Locate. Used with your Ordnance Survey map, OS Locate is a fast and highly accurate way to pinpoint your exact location on a map, anywhere in the UK. If you’re lost or just want a little reassurance, OS Locate is the ideal companion for all outdoor enthusiasts.
This app converts GPS location readings from your phone to the Ordnance Survey National Grid reference, allowing you to pinpoint where you are on the Ordnance Survey map. No cellular signal? It does not matter; OS Locate does not require a cellular signal to function – the built-in GPS system is reliable, even in the most remote areas.
Just download the app and enable your device’s location services (Settings – Privacy – Location services).
Compass accuracy: the app relies on your device’s built-in compass and if this isn’t accurate, the compass shown will also be wrong. Accuracy generally increases the longer you open the app and many users report moving the device within a figure of eight helps calibrate the compass and provide more accurate readings. Of course, like any compass, keep it away from metal objects or magnets!
OS Locate is packed with additional features. The ‘Share’ button lets you connect with friends and family via messages and social media – let them know where you are, how your adventure is progressing and what time you’ll be home. Use a handy digital compass to pinpoint your direction – always make sure you’re on the right track. For those who want to learn more about maps and navigation, the ‘About’ button holds a wealth of information including hints and tips as well as a guide to reading the map. Plus, you’ll find a simple but comprehensive guide on how to use the east and north directions.
OS Location – know where you are.
OS Locate is a complementary tool to Ordnance Survey paper maps. You should always have an Ordnance Survey paper map and a base plate compass on hand when exploring the great outdoors.
Continuous use of GPS running in the background can dramatically reduce battery life.
Make sure your Location Services is enabled.
